Verdis Hogan

WEATHER UPDATE:    The Friday evening visitation and prayer service has been cancelled due to weather.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Verdis Hogan, 99, Mandan, died March 15, 2018 at her home.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with Rev. Lee Herberg officiating.  Burial will take place at Stone Lutheran Cemetery in rural Mandan later in the spring.

Visitation will be held at from 6 to 7 pm on Friday, March 23 at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, with a prayer service at 7 pm.  Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Verdis was born May 28, 1918 in Mandan to Oscar and Ethel (Wolfe) Swanberg.  On February 14, 1941 she married Glen Hogan at her parents’ home.  She graduated from Dickinson State College.  Verdis and Glen bought the farm she was born and raised on.  There they raised their five children.  Glen passed away in February, 1996.  Verdis continued to live on the farm until November, 1999 when she moved to Liberty Heights in Mandan.

Verdis was very generous and giving of her time.  She was a 4-H leader, active in Farmers Union and Stone Lutheran Church, and taught Sunday school and also taught at several country schools (grades 1-8).  She enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, and was a big time quilter.

Blessed to have shared in her life are four daughters, Dawn (Larry) Hoffman, Polson, MT, Kaye Holliman, Marysville, WA, Sandy (Dennis) Toepke, Mandan, and Ethel (Carl) Metcalf, Superior, MT; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; one sister, Esther Baker, WA; and many nieces and nephews.

Verdis was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glen; son, James; sisters, Marcelle Napes, Murriel Mitmoen, and Deloris Kardonsky; and one brother, Rudy Swanberg.

In lieu of flowers, Verdis wished for memorials to Stone Lutheran Cemetery.
