Rose L. Schmidt, 95, Mandan, died December 29, 2010 at the Medcenter One Care Center Off Collins in Mandan. Rose was born December 7, 1915 on the family farm in Oliver County, the daughter of Christ and Clematina (Barnhardt) Geiger. Raised and educated in Oliver County, Rose married George Schmidt on December 1, 1934 at St. Vincent’s Church in Crown Butte. They farmed east of Center until 1970 when she and George moved to Mandan. Rose’s hobbies were many, but especially caring for her plants. She would often break a slip off of a plant to start a new one, and then give the plant to her visitor. She always had to have a garden, and would find a way to get seed, one way or another, even though she didn’t drive. She will be remembered as very generous and giving of her time. She was a member of the Ladies Alter Society, Farmers Union youth leader, foster parent, St. Vincent Ladies Verein, Moose Auxiliary, Catholic Daughters, Christian Women, Golden Age, RSVP, volunteer for March of Dimes, and Mandan Aid Inc. Rose worked at Heartview, the Seven Seas, and had a day care in her home. In 2009 Rose moved to the care center. She enjoyed getting to go out and about with her family and when they’d bring her back she’d always say, “Don’t forget me, I need you.” A wonderful woman, kind and caring to all, she will never be forgotten.
Blessed to have shared her life are three daughters, Vivian (Connie) Erhardt, Underwood, ND, Eileen (David) Gratz, Mandan, and Clem Meyer, Bismarck; one son, Reynard (Joletta) Schmidt, Center, ND; 21 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; two sisters, Justina Fleck, Tacoma, WA and Maggie Schafer, Mandan; two brothers, John (Frances) Geiger and Jerome (Cecilia) Geiger, all of Mandan; and two sisters-in-law, Barbara Geiger and Elizabeth Glaser.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George, in 2002; a son-in-law, Norman Meyer; two sisters, Beada Frank and Ann Himmelspach; four brothers, Frank, Christ, Adam, and Matt; four brothers-in-law, Ralph Fleck, Tony Himmelspach, John Schafer, and Mike Frank; two sisters-in-law, Betty Geiger and Genevieve Geiger.
