Richard was born May 10, 1955 in Bismarck, the son of Richard A. and Elaine (Heidlebaugh) Sornsin. Raised and educated in Mandan, he graduated from Mandan High School in 1973. Rick then enlisted in the U. S. Army. Following his discharge from the service, he began his thirty-two year employment with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, working as a brakeman/carman until he retired due to a disability. A life time resident of Mandan, Rick was united in marriage to Brenda Davis on October 19, 2007.
Rick loved music and was an accomplished guitar player. A licensed pilot, he at one time flew his own plane. Rick enjoyed the water, especially boating and water skiing. The time he spent on the water in his boat was when he was happiest. One of his first boats was a 28- foot vessel named, “Heidi Jayne” after his daughter. The second boat was a 28-foot cabin cruiser. A very kind and big-hearted man, Rick cherished every minute he could spend with his grandchildren.
Rick will be missed by many, including his wife, Brenda; his daughter, Heidi Sornsin of Mandan; his son, Jesse (Amy) Sornsin of Bismarck; Brenda’s daughters, Christy (Eric) Hoffman of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Lindsay (Dan) Moos of Bismarck; his grandchildren, Noah, Tanner and Madix Sornsin, Gracey, Jacob, Abigail, Micah and Benjamin Hoffman and Jordan, Jackson, Kasen and Austyn Moos; his sisters, Laura Button of Effingham, Illinois and Susan Laub of Anchorage, Alaska; his brother, Jeffery (Penny) Sornsin of Durango, Colorado; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers-in-law, Bruce Laub and Kenny Davis.
