Leland was born in rural Mandan on June 12, 1930 to Carl and Adla (Johnson) Olsen. He attended Highland Country School and later a trade school in Wahpeton. Leland was fortunate to live south of Mandan, near his family, his entire life. Hardworking and a farmer at heart, Leland was proud to learn the original ways of farming with a team of horses and graduate to John Deere tractors. He also drove a mail route. On August 17, 1958 he married Delores Steffenson in Mandan. Leland worked for Doc Stoe as a vet assistant at Kist Livestock for many years. Always sharing a new joke with a twinkle in his eye, Leland enjoyed making other’s lives happier in his own way and his morning coffee route kept him in touch with friends and family. Generous and giving, his shop door was always open for neighbors who needed parts or help with something. He always asked more of himself than of others and would make time to help someone in need. Delores passed away in September 2000 and Leland found a new sense of independence and was often a friendly face in the crowd or café at Kist Livestock. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, the Elks, Eagles, Sons of Norway, and served on the Farm Bureau Board. A beloved father and grandfather, he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Blessed to have shared his life are four children, Jeff (Char) Olsen, Mandan, Lynette (Allen) Burch, Sioux Falls, SD, Craig Olsen (special friend, Tracy Engelhorn), Mandan, and Beth (Brad) Allen, Mandan; 12 grandchildren, Ethan and LeAnna Olsen, Heather, Brianna, and Katelyn Burch, Ryan, RandiJo, and Tucker Olsen, and Annie, Brent, Bryce, and Abby Allen; two great grandchildren, Rylan and Emma; two sisters, LaVerne Nelson and Norma Nelson, both of Mandan; brother, Duane (Mavis) Olsen, Mandan; numerous nieces and nephews; and his dancing partner, Louise.
Leland was preceded in death by his wife, Delores; his parents; brothers-in-law, Archie and Cliff Nelson; and niece, Donna Toman.
