Kenneth “Kenny” was born December 13, 1928 in New Salem, ND to Kurt & Martha (Moebius) Kunz. He attended school and completed the 8th grade in New Salem. Kenny married Catherine “Katie” Freidt on September 6th, 1949 at St. Pius Catholic Church in New Salem. They were the first couple to get married in the new church building. Together they lived on the family homestead north of New Salem until they moved into town in November 1999. They retired as dairy farmers in 1982 and retired from helping their son Ron (Margo) with farming operations in 2010.
Kenny served as a local brand inspector and worked at the weigh station in New Salem for many years. He also enjoyed other jobs such as bartending, butchering, selling seed corn, and working in the coal mine. Kenny was especially proud of being crowned the ND State Bending Race Champion at the New Salem Horse Show in 1949.
Kenny served as a member and board officer for the local Fire Protection District, the local Saddle Club, the Sportsman Club, and the Eagles Club in Mandan. As a member of St. Pius Church, he was instrumental in the church building project and served on several church committees. He always enjoyed a good game of pinochle, teaching his grandchildren how to play and getting a chuckle when he would take their money. Kenny loved attending his children and grandchildren’s activities. He found great joy in hunting, fishing, and especially making sausage. Kenny’s retirement brought lots of great and memorable fishing time for him and Katie and anyone they could convince to go with them.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Katie Kunz of New Salem; his children, Jerry (Darlyn), Russell (Susie), Dennis (Vicki) Kunz, all of Bismarck, Carol (Dennis) Bauer of Lame Deer, MT, Tim (Tami) Kunz of Bismarck, Carleen (Danny) Cosner of Buffalo, WY, Kelvin (Sandy) Kunz of Mandan, Dixie (Doug) Sorge of Billings, MT, & Ron (Margo) Kunz of New Salem; 24 grandchildren & 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Lester (Mary) Kunz of Bismarck; and two sisters-in-law, Elaine Kunz of New Salem, & Delores Kunz of Sacramento, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Dean; one great grandson, Elijah; two brothers, Walter & Elmer; his wife’s parents, Sebastian & Rosie Friedt; & two nephews, Kurt & David.
