Jim was born to Clifford and Ethel (Cahoon) Benjamin on January 19, 1940, in Hazen, ND. Jim was raised in rural Oliver County and educated at country school west of Center. Jim spent his early adulthood traveling throughout North Dakota and Montana working on power plant construction crews. He had a keen eye for finding solutions to construction problems and became a talented welder. Eventually, Jim returned to the family farm in rural Oliver County to raise cattle and farm. He continued to use his mechanical and welding talents for years, fixing broken machinery for family, friends, and neighbors.

Jim enjoyed attending auctions; collecting guns, tractors, and gadgets; and catching up with friends and neighbors. He also had a deep interest in history and genealogy. Even through his declining health, he remained positive and good-natured, taking it all in stride.

He is survived by his sister, Jean Kessler, Bismarck; one niece, Kami Emineth, Mandan; two nephews, Jason Kessler, Mandan and Jarett (Jacklyn) Kessler, Bismarck; three great-nieces, Sara Emineth, Leah Emineth, and Khloe Kessler; and numerous aunts, cousins, and friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother-in-law, Lloyd Kessler.
