Gloria Maier, 95, New Salem, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2025, at Elm Crest Manor in New Salem.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, September 29, 2025, at Peace Church in New Salem with Rev. Mark Hassler presiding. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Monday. Burial will be held on Tuesday, September 30, at 2 PM at Peace Cemetery in New Salem.

Gloria was born to Albert and Clara (Anderson) Schmidt on February 17, 1930, south of Almont on the Anderson family farm along the Heart River. Her father delivered her. She was raised primarily in the New Salem area with short periods in Valley City, ND and Portland, OR. On September 3, 1950, Gloria married Charles Maier at Peace United Church of Christ in New Salem. They lived on the Maier Ranch in Oliver County where they raised three children. Gloria was involved in the farming operation with Charles and later ran The Lunch Box in the Golden West Shopping Center for 13 years. Charles died on April 10, 2011. They shared 60 years together.

Gloria was a member of the New Salem Saddle Club, New Salem Rodeo Association, Hannover Farmettes, Peace Church Women’s Guild, and the New Salem Historical Society. In 1992, she started writing for the New Salem Journal.

Blessed to have shared in her life are her three children, Greg (Diane) Maier of New Salem, Marie (David) Wolsky of Cando, and Loren (Renee) Maier of Glenwood, MN. Gloria was a proud grandparent of ten grandchildren, Melanie (Allen) Nilles, Matt (Deceased), Katie (deceased), James (Monique) Franciere, Kate (Devin) Tolstad, Amy (Jaread) Miller, Lacey Maier, Bobby (Mel) Wolsky, Pace (Sydney) Maier, and Karly (Drew) Nelson; and 15 great grandchildren, Sydney and Lexi Nilles, Jamie and Matt Franciere, Hunter, Avery, Harper, and Brynn Tolstad, Kolter and Kasyn Miller, Mattie Jo Maier, Zenny Maier, Scarlett Wolsky, and Rowen and Millie Nelson.

Gloria was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles; brother and sister-in-law, Clayton and Edna Schmidt; and two grandchildren, Matthew Franciere and Katie Jo Maier.

Memorials are preferred to the New Salem Historical Society or Elm Crest Manor in New Salem.
