Dwight Cook

December 14, 1951 — January 7, 2024

It's time to come home my good and faithful servant. Dwight Cook, 72, Mandan, ND, entered his eternal home on January 7, 2024.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 19, 2024, at Zion Lutheran Church, Bismarck, ND. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Thursday, January 18, 2024, from 5:00-6:30 PM at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, with a Prayer Service at 6:30 PM. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday.

Dwight was born on Dec. 14, 1951 to Robert and Irene Cook, the seventh of eight children. He attended school in Glyndon, MN, and NDSU in Fargo. On April 20, 1974, he married Shirley and settled in West Fargo until they moved to Mandan in 1982. They raised three children,  and were blessed with eight grandchildren.

Throughout the years Dwight played and coached softball, was a member of the Air National Guard, a member of Kiwanis for 30 years, chaired the Morton County Housing Authority, and started his own business. Throughout his many endeavors he always gave 100%.

Dwight's prayers were always to be the best at whatever God had in store for him throughout his life. This was truly evident when he served in the North Dakota Senate. One of his famous quotes was “the road to perfection is always under construction”. His family was proud of all that he had accomplished, especially his role as husband, father and grandfather.

We will miss his jokes, his laughter, playing pinochle, and his words of wisdom. His favorite Bible verse was 1Corinthians 9:24-25 – Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Dwight and Shirley were members of Shepherd of the Valley Church.

Dwight leaves behind his wife Shirley, his children Bobbie (Terrill) Slaughter and their four children, Baillie, Jordan (Mike) Lyste, Julia and Sydney, Becky (Jeremy) Gildea, and their two children Madison and MacKenzie, and Matthew (Mandy) Cook, and their children Kylie and Carter Cook; six siblings, Jim (Bev) Cook, Cherryll Hoffman, Jerry (Ione) Cook, Kathryn Miller, Lowell (Joanne) Cook and his twin sister Doris (Mark) Mancell, plus many nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Irene Cook, nephew Troy Cook, sister Janith Ness and her husband Jim, and brother-in-laws Jim Miller and Ken Hoffman.

Our family appreciates all the prayers and support through the last three weeks, it has meant so much to us. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Mandan Parks and Recreation Foundation Att: Dwight Cook Memorial Fund 2600 46th Ave SE, Mandan, ND, 58554.
