Dennis was born April 26, 1951 in Mandan, the second of ten children to Joseph Jr. and Clara (Bullinger) Hatzenbuhler. He was raised in Mandan and graduated from Mandan High School in 1969. Throughout his childhood, Dennis worked a paper route. Dennis earned several awards and trips as an outstanding paper delivery person. Most important on his route though, was a young girl he met named Pam Jesser. They were neighbors as infants and Pam was known to harass Dennis when he delivered their paper. Eventually Dennis won her heart and they were married on June 20, 1970. Dennis worked at Red Owl Grocery Store in Mandan and then as the General Manager of Mid State Oil. He and Pam purchased the grocery store in Flasher where they ran D & P Foods together for 18 years. A dedicated, generous, and easy going man, Dennis was active in the community of Flasher. He was a member of numerous clubs, served on the City Commission, and was President of the Flasher Community Club. Moving back to Mandan in 2000, Dennis was the Manager at Mandan Burger King and also a driver for Nightlife Limo. Family was the most important thing to Dennis and he loved spending time with his children and their families as well as his extended family. Dennis’s passion was collecting wheat pennies, a hobby he had since childhood, with every penny being inventoried. He also liked scrapping and taking things apart. He liked going to Menards, people watching, and never said no to a good buffet. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and brother, Dennis will be missed. He always looked for the good in people and was a friend to everyone he met. His easy going down to earth nature made him a stranger to no one. Dennis had numerous health issues in his life and always stayed positive through his illnesses, bringing laughter to the nurses and staff who cared for him. The family thanks the staff on 4th and 7th floor at Sanford Health for the exceptional care given to Dennis.

Blessed to have shared his life is his beloved wife of 47 years, Pam, Mandan; son, Michael (Kari) Hatzenbuhler, Mandan; daughters, Kristen (Conan) Moore and Maggie Hatzenbuhler, all of Mandan, and Jennifer Hatzenbuhler, Bismarck; 16 grandchildren, Kelsi, Kassidi, Karter, Bradley, Ashley, Matthew, Marshall, Isaiah, Seth, Trey, Penelope, Zhalia, Zorion, Jodi, Nevada, and Mason; one great grandson, Aiden; sisters, Elaine (Richard) Neibauer, Stanton, Linda (Tom) Fried, Fran (Perry) Freidig, both of Mandan, and Julie (Jim) Nelson, Bismarck; brothers, Nick (Elaine), Jeff, Joe (Mary), all of Mandan, Richard (Rhonda) Rapid City, SD, and Craig, Bismarck; as well as many nieces, nephews, and countless friends.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Clara Hatzenbuhler; his in-laws, Ted and Margaret Jesser; granddaughter, Jordan Hatzenbuhler; and sister-in-laws, Patty Jesser and Kim Hatzenbuhler.
