Angels came and lifted Dallas Norton to his everlasting peaceful home.

A funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Thursday, March 31, 2016 at Peace Church, New Salem, with Reverend Joshua Eddy officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery.

Dallas (Dally) Norton passed away on March 28, 2016 at Elm Crest Manor in New Salem. Dallas was born on March 21, 1918 to Harley and Emma (Zarndt) Norton. He was raised on the family farm just south of New Salem and attended New Salem Public School. As a young man, he worked on the farm, helped mine and sell coal at various area sites, and during the dirty thirties went to work for farms in the Red River Valley.

On June 1, 1940 he married Ruby Christensen, who taught in a nearby rural school house. They began farm life on an old farmstead southeast of town. They operated a dairy and beef farm until retirement in 1984, although Dally never really retired from being a farmer. The couple moved in to New Salem in 1987 and have resided at Elm Crest for the past few years.

Dallas devoted his life to his faith, serving with Gideons International and Steere, Inc and on church councils. He also served on the boards of the school district and the F.U. Locker Association. After retiring from farming he worked as a carpenter, building houses for his family and other relatives. He also spent many Sunday mornings serving as a lay minister in various area churches.

Dallas will always be remembered as a man with a mild manner and a kind heart. Dallas’ pride and joy was his three sons and their families which was evident by his constant support and attendance of their sporting events.

He is survived by his bride of almost 76 years, Ruby; his sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Avis of SD, Curtis and Kathy of Phoenix, AZ, and Clark and Deb of New Salem; one sister, Nina Filibeck, New Salem; 7 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bill, Ed, and Bert; sisters, Evelyn, Helen, and Beverly; and one grandson, Turner Norton.
