August J. “Sonny” Mattson, 73, Mandan, died June 28, 2014 at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, July 3 at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, with Reverend Lee Herberg officiating. Burial will be at St. John’s Cemetery, south of Mandan.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 pm on Wednesday, July 2 at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home and continue one hour prior to the service.
August “Sonny” was born September 3, 1940 to Elmer C. and Agnes (Pesek) Mattson. Born and raised in Mandan, Sonny farmed with his parents and brother, Chuck, all of his life until retiring in 2004 when he started his favorite hobby of gardening and supplying friends and family with the fruits of his labor. Sonny was an active member of the ZCBJ Lodge 147 (The Bohemian Hall). Sonny would always be willing to lend a helping hand no matter what it was and always greeted you with a smile and a “Howdy.” His hobbies were fishing, playing cards, especially smear, gardening, and going to auction sales.
Sonny is survived by his brothers, Chuck Mattson and Elmer (Sue) Mattson; sister, Marie (Tom) Weinberger, all of Mandan; three nephews, Tom Weinberger Jr., Jacob Weinberger, (special friend, Lynn), and Randy (Melissa) Mattson, all of Mandan; one niece, Stephanie (Travis) Schmidt, Solen, ND; a special great nephew, Logan T. Schmidt, Solen; and great nieces and nephew, Nicole, Bradley, and Veronica Mattson, Mandan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and sister, Betty.
